"Lift the Silence: Directing a PSA That Amplifies Mental Health Awareness
Grace Le - PSA Project for Trone Center for Mental Fitness
What I Did
For my project, I created Lift the Silence, a cinematic PSA highlighting mental health struggles among college students. Filmed entirely on Furman’s campus, the video follows a student overwhelmed by academic pressure and isolation—visualized through symbolic metaphors like a heavy backpack, labeled books, and a stumbling rock. She eventually finds support through campus resources like the Trone Student Center for Mental Fitness. I handled all phases—from scripting to editing—collaborating with friends as actors and using Adobe Premiere Pro for post-production.
What I Learned
This project showed me that storytelling is empathy in action. Metaphors helped make mental health struggles feel relatable without sensationalism. I also gained technical skills:
-
Color grading: I shifted from cool blues to warm ambers to mirror the character’s emotional journey.
-
Depth of field: Blurred backgrounds kept focus on the protagonist, heightening her isolation.
-
Sound design: Ambient noise and music reinforced the mood and transformation.
Most importantly, I learned to trust collaboration. Improvised moments—like Rachel’s unscripted hand squeeze—brought unexpected authenticity.
How I’ll Use These Skills
As a future marketer, I’ll apply these lessons to future campaigns:
-
Human-centered storytelling to create campaigns that prioritize emotional connection.
-
Authenticity over polish, encouraging clients or actors to embrace vulnerability.
-
Technical tools like color and focus as part of my visual strategy toolkit.
Behind-the-scene moments:
(This scene’s warmth was achieved through natural golden-hour lighting and collaborative acting.)
(I used depth of field to emphasize the emotional “weight” symbolized by the labeled books.)
Final Thoughts
Creating Lift the Silence wasn’t just a class project—it was a lesson in the media's power to spark change. Mental health is a universal struggle, but as the World Health Organization reports, stigma still silences millions. Moving forward, I’m committed to using visual storytelling to amplify voices and spark action. After all, a single frame can speak volumes.
