Stepping into the buzzing TV studio of FUNC (Furman University News Channel), I felt the electric hum of collaboration. As an observer, I wasn’t just watching a news show come together; I was decoding the invisible threads of teamwork and precision that stitch together every second of student television.

What Did I Do?

I shadowed the FUNC team during a live show rehearsal, witnessing firsthand how they orchestrate a seamless broadcast. One crew member manned the switcher, toggling between cameras with the focus of a chess master. Another operated the teleprompter manually, matching the anchors’ pace with a precision that felt like a duet. If a mic crackled or a camera angle needed adjustment, they reset in seconds, laughing through the do-overs.

My role? To absorb the rhythm—the mic checks, the lighting adjustments, the rapid-fire communication—and assist with minor setup tasks. One of the most fascinating moments was watching the team reshoot a segment three times without hesitation. Despite the pressure, they embraced the process, tweaking angles and refining transitions until everything clicked.

What Did I Learn?

  1. Preparation is Non-Negotiable: Every second counted. Scripts were rehearsed, mics tested, and camera angles pre-set. This meticulous preparation allowed the team to troubleshoot on the fly—like when a mic was cut out, and a backup was swapped in seamlessly.

  2. Teamwork = Telepathy: The switcher operator and script-scroller worked in perfect sync, using coded phrases like “Go to camera 2” or “Hold scroll.” There was no room for miscommunication—only crisp, clear dialogue.

  3. Embrace the Reshoot: Mistakes weren’t failures; they were opportunities. The crew’s calmness during retakes proved that adaptability is just as crucial as planning.

The Value of Student Television

FUNC isn’t just about creating content—it’s a training ground for real-world resilience. Student television teaches you to think on your feet, collaborate under pressure, and craft stories that resonate. It’s a space where creativity thrives, free from corporate influence and powered by peer feedback. And seeing your work air for the entire campus? That’s a thrill no classroom lecture can match.

How I’ll Use This in the Future

Whether I’m producing a podcast, leading a project team, or pitching ideas in a future role, FUNC’s lessons will stay with me:

  • Prep Like a Pro: Test your tools, rehearse your lines, and always have a Plan B.

  • Trust Your Crew: Clear roles and strong communication prevent disasters.

  • Stay Calm, Reshoot, Repeat: Perfection isn’t instant—it’s earned through iteration

Final Takeaway

Walking out of the studio, I realized that every smooth transition, crisp audio clip, and confident reporter’s smile is built on hours of preparation and trust. FUNC isn’t just making news—they’re making creators, quick-thinking problem-solvers. And after watching them work, I’m convinced: the real magic isn’t on the screen. It’s in the people behind it.

Stay tuned!
